Pelo menos 1.228 das denominações contam com apenas um templo; a maioria está na periferia da cidade. As 26 maiores representações estão espalhadas por 2.923 endereços; outras religiões somam 1.274 templos A cidade de São Paulo tem pelo menos 4.151 templos e associações evangélicos. Quase um terço corresponde a pequenas igrejas que têm apenas um templo e recebem nomes que muitas vezes soam estranhos. No geral, essas denominações são pentecostais (sem vínculo com evangélicos tradicionais) e começam com um pastor, Bíblia e meia dúzia de fiéis em uma garagem da periferia. Os números foram organizados pelo Centro de Estudos da Metrópole (CEM) do Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (Cebrap), a partir dos registros de pessoa jurídica de 2000, coletados pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). No total, o estudo aponta para 5.425 endereços religiosos na cidade. Segundo o Censo 2000, cerca de 16% da população paulistana, ou 1,6 milhão pessoas, se declaram evangélicas, sendo que 1,2 milhão são pentecostais. |
